Subwaydle

Subwaydle is a fun way to find out how well you know the New York subway system. The main goal is to plan a day trip using subway signs, but there are some rules about turns and transfers that you must follow. If you're not from New York or don't ride the subway, this version might sound scary.

How to play the game subwaydle
Both Subwaydle and Wordle have a lot of the same rules. There is a line that goes between two of the metro's 472 stations every day. For example, in Friday's puzzle, people have to get from Jefferson Avenue to Wall Street twice. To get from one train to the next, you have to plan a trip with three trains and two changes. No matter how good the route is, it has to work within the limits of the metro system. Neither transfers outside of stations nor bus connections are allowed.

Like Wordle, each time you try to give a hint, the color of the cells will change. The weekend quizzes are based on the train schedule for the weekend, while the weekday quizzes are based on the noon train schedule. There are six chances to try again.

Subway laws
There are other ways to get there, but the goal is to find the best one for the puzzle of the day. The path might not be the best or fastest way to get there. You should also know that there are several subway stops in New York City with the same name.

There is no way to go back because no station can be reached more than once.

Transit is only allowed on separate routes (i.e. you cannot switch back and forth between two lines with the same stops). A local road can be turned into an expressway and then back into a local road, but an expressway can't be turned into a local road and then back into the same expressway.

The South Ferry, Whitehall St-South Ferry, and Bowling Green ferry stations can be used to get to or from St. George (using the Staten Island Ferry). There are also free transfers between stations that don't belong to the same system. People think that all stations let you turn in any direction, even though that's not true.

On Subwaydle, there is a button called "Hint" that will tell you where to start and where to end, but it won't show you the actual route. Coming up with a solution can be just as hard. We hope you have a good trip!
